Misconceptions surrounding industries are important factors to consider whilst deciding on a field of study. A thorough comprehension of selected advantages and disadvantages may influence one's perception and allow a greater understanding of the sector in itself and humanity as a whole.

HIGHER SALARY

On average, STEM jobs, pay out about 70% more than the national salary average. (Krueger) They also earn about 33% more than their counterparts in other fields (www.whitehouse.gov). While it does not necessarily guarantee a higher salary, careers in this field have been found to comprise the majority of the top 10 highest paying college majors (Glassdoor). Additionally, the STEM employment rate exceeds the norm. However, a salary is dependant on a multitude of other factors such as experience, position, etc.

INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE

With the ever-rising technology in our modern day world, technological fields have become gradually more important. Science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer sciences are at the heart of revolutionary changes that shape the foundation of society. Oftentimes it can be start of a very promising career, and draw international students to study in North America because it is a very useful tool. Due to the fact that STEM fields are in high demand, North American universities have grown their scholarship funding programs, which now offer a variety of STEM-related financial aid.

CAREER FLEXIBILITY

Non STEM industries recruit many STEM students, as their major does not necessarily determine in what domain their career might be. This field choice has been shown to increase performance in other areas such as enhance creativity in art, allow more critical thinking and analysis in the English subject area, and development in data analysis skills. Even the business industry employs many students who have a major or minor in computer sciences. The opportunities are endless, and studying in the STEM field is truly rewarding.

GENDER PREJUDICE

Women are often perceived as less capable to perform tasks required by careers  in STEM. Whether subconscious or not, the negative actions and behaviours of those surrounding every individual, particularly women, have an influence on their belief in personal abilities. Research and studies by large-scale companies such as the New York Times have revealed that when women begin to enter male-dominated fields, the pay decreases. STEM industries are recognized as highly challenging and competitive, which can simultaneously be a pro and a con. Whilst it has the potential to increase passion and drive for a certain subject area, there are often numerous highly qualified candidates applying for the same program or position. In consequence, the selectivity in terms of acceptance and success is increased.
